Mustang Champions - Fort Worth 2026
Owner: Looking for one!
HMA: Pancake NV
AGE: 5

The Pancake HMA Mustangs
The Pancake Herd Management Area (HMA) stretches across
the rugged desert ranges of east-central Nevada, near Ely and
Eureka. Covering over a million acres of sweeping sagebrush valleys
and rocky mountain terrain, this landscape has shaped a unique herd of
wild horses known for their hardiness, athleticism, and striking variety of colors.
A Legacy Written in the Desert
Pancake mustangs are descendants of Spanish horses, cavalry stock, and ranch horses turned loose decades ago. Over generations, they’ve adapted to one of the harshest environments in the Great Basin. This survival has created horses that are:
Tough and durable – sure-footed and built to handle extreme weather and sparse forage.
Athletic and forward-moving – with stamina that makes them excellent partners for ranch work, endurance, and performance.
Intelligent and sensitive – quick learners who respond well to consistent, fair training.
Bond-focused – once trust is established, they often form strong, lasting connections with their humans.
Appearance and Traits
Pancake HMA horses come in a wide range of colors, from bays, blacks, and sorrels to duns, grays, and roans. Many are dark bays with chrome accents, carrying both strength and eye-catching beauty. Typically standing 14 to 15 hands, they are medium-framed but built with balance and power. Their clean lines, alert expressions, and strong hindquarters reflect both their Spanish influence and ranch horse heritage.
Temperament
At first, Pancake mustangs may be cautious and independent — traits born from survival in open range. But with patience and the right training, they reveal their willing hearts, sharp minds, and incredible work ethic. Owners often describe them as “little horses with big personalities,” bringing both grit and charm into the arena, on the trail, or at home on the ranch.
Why a Pancake Mustang?
For those willing to invest time in building trust, a Pancake HMA mustang offers: A partner as tough as the Nevada desert itself. A horse that can excel in diverse disciplines — from cow work to trail to therapy and beyond. A loyal companion who reflects the resilience and spirit of America’s wild mustangs.

MUSTANG CHAMPIONS - VEGAS 2024

Katie Hartmann, talks about her experience:
Oh man. Where to even begin!
About a year ago, I saw Jeff's Facebook post looking for a partner on a handsome Mustang gelding, DH Tequila Sunrise. To this day, I am still not sure why I felt compelled to reach out, but I did, and Jeff and I talked on the phone about what this partnership could look like. I said I'd think about it; it's a big commitment with many unknowns!! I had seen Jeff produce quite a few nice horses over the years and called a few friends of mine in the Mustang world for a background check, basically to make sure Jeff was a good guy. Everyone I reached out to said full green light, and that the Cook family were good people. A week after Jeff and I initially talked, I called him back and said I was in.
From the very beginning, Jeff and his daughter Chris sent photos/videos/updates and my husband and I had a blast keeping up with their progress. In April, Johnny and I even flew up to Tucson to meet Sunny and Jeff/his family, and had more fun than I could have ever imagined!
The show was amazing, and I couldn't be prouder of the final product of Sunny that Jeff produced. Sunny was level headed the entire week, and handled everything like a pro. (ok and also let's hear it for those lead changes!!!)
Fast forwarding to now, I have had Sunny since mid-July, and he is my main ride in Houston. We have hauled all over the state of Texas and I can honestly say I have a well-rounded, confident, and kind partner in this horse. I feel so lucky to have him, and the incredible amount of hard work Jeff put into him shows. Partnering with Jeff on a horse has been such a blessing and I wouldn't have traded this experience for the world! If I was at all needing another horse, Jeff, Kelsey, Christian and Dream Horse would be my first call. The highlight of 2024 for me!
Seriously, if you are reading this and need any sort of "push" to get in on this deal, shoot me a message- I could talk about this experience all day We are so happy with Sunny, and thankful for such wonderful new friends.
